Frequently asked questions

How are your handcrafted items different from machine-made things?

Handcrafted products are made by skilled artisans who are passionate about their work. They take great pride in what they do, and they put a lot of time and effort into making sure each piece is perfect. However, even the most experienced artisans can make mistakes or encounter unforeseen challenges during the creative process.

The beauty of handcrafted products lies in their uniqueness and character. Each piece is one-of-a-kind and has its own individual quirks and imperfections. While these imperfections may add to the charm of the piece, they can also make it more difficult to get everything exactly right the first time.

Because handcrafted products are made by humans rather than machines, revisions and adjustments are often necessary to ensure that the final product meets the customer's expectations. These revisions are a natural part of the creative process.

Revisions are not a sign of failure or incompetence. On the contrary, they demonstrate the artisan's dedication to their craft and their commitment to delivering a high-quality product. By working with the customer to make necessary revisions, the artisan is able to create a product that truly meets the customer's needs and exceeds their expectations.

Overall, it's important to remember that handcrafted products are a labor of love, and that revisions are a normal and necessary part of the creative process. By working closely with the artisan and being patient during the revision process, we end up with a beautiful, unique, and truly one-of-a-kind piece that will be cherished for years to come.

Is there 14 days return on made-to-order rugs?

Yes, but since the item is made especially for you we are only able to issue store credit. We understand that you are trusting us with your money and time to create the perfect rug but it is also important that you understand that these rugs are made by hand from start to finish. This means that the women in Morocco are doing their best to match the colors of the yarn, however since each dye is mixed by hand it is not always possible to create exactly the same color tone as shown on our website. We are confident that you will love the quality and style of our rugs and part of this style is that every rug is one-of-a-kind. We cannot guarantee 100% accuracy on color, size and pattern since there are no computers or machines involved in the manufacturing process. As have always been the case, these rugs are made with ancient techniques by humans that do their utmost to satisfy your needs. In case some detail goes obviously wrong throughout the making of your rug, we will do our best to solve the issue and even perhaps start over to create an entirely new rug at no extra cost to you. Please understand that making a rug one knot at a time is hard work and since humans are involved, there can be mistakes. We thank you kindly for your understanding and cooperation.

Can I pay for your rugs with a monthly plan?

Yes! if you pay through PayPal and you are eligible for their monthly payments. PayPal offers up to 24 months of payments to customers with a strong purchasing history through their services. Please go all the way through our checkout process and log in with your PayPal account to see if you are eligible.

Do I need to clean my new rug?

All of our rugs have been washed and dried in the sun for several days before they leave Morocco. That said, vintage rugs can shed quite a lot of fibers which makes them feel dusty until they settle into your home and for those we recommend that you vacuum with extra enthusiasm. This also applies to our vintage pillows and poufs.

How do I care for my beautiful handmade rug?

Taking care of your rug takes some diligence, but do it right and you will be rewarded with a rug that lasts a lifetime! There are obviously several levels to dirtiness which tend to mostly depend on how close you keep your rug to animals, children, kitchens and drunk grown-ups. Below we will cover general maintenance, stain removal, professional cleaning, sunlight, moths and holes.

  1. General maintenance - As long as you have no specific stains or other issues with your rug, then maintenance is generally as simple as using a vacuum cleaner. Whether you use the brush on your vacuum head or not is entirely up to you. The trade-off here is between how clean your rug will get and how much fluff it retains. We prefer to vacuum perpendicular to the pile because it cleans deep enough without removing too much fluff. If you have the possibility to shake or beat your rug outdoors then please do, it's a great way to keep it clean.

  2. Stain removal - More info coming soon, please contact us if you need help removing a certain stain.

  3. Professional cleaning - We recommend that you hand your rug over to a professional rug cleaner that specialises in oriental rugs since they will have experience with the kind of rugs we sell. It is good practice to give your rug a deep clean once every two years or so even if you don't have any stains on it. Of course you might be rigorous in your cleaning but for sure you will notice the difference once your rug has had a real wash. Professional cleaning is also recommended in case you have stains that you can't deal with yourself or in case you find moths or holes in your rug. Most oriental rug cleaners will be able to soak your rug in special moth repellant fluids that often are organic and odorless. Most cleaners can also fix holes in your rug, but don't be surprised if they charge a pretty penny for this service as it is very labour intensive.

  4. Broken holes - Hand your rug over to a professional rug cleaner that specialises in oriental rugs. You will be amazed by how much damage they are able to fix without leaving a trace. As mentioned above, this service is usually quite expensive so better have a small hole fixed before it becomes too big.

  5. Sun damage - Our rugs are made with high quality dies but some colors are more sensitive to UV than others and most of them will fade with time if you keep your rug in the sun all day long. That said, it's great to let the sun shine on your rug parts of the day since it will help keep moths away. If you lay your rug in a spot where only part of it gets sun, try spinning it around once in a while to even out the fading.

  6. Clothes moths - Dealing with moths is something we humans have had to do for as long as we have been wearing clothes on our backs and it's better to be vigitlant and act quickly than ignoring the problem thinking it will simply go away by itself. The culprit here is Tineola bisselliella, also known as the common clothes moth. These little critters are probably the worst thing that could happen to your rug since they are both difficult to get rid of and love to munch on the wool fibers that your rug is made from, leaving holes both small and large in their path of destruction. There are plenty of home remedies available on the web to try and we have tried them all. Our advice to you is most definitely to hand your rug over to a professional and let them deal with it for you, they can also treat the rug with moth repellant which lasts for many years and you can rest assured that the problem is gone completely. With this said, there are a few things we would like to tell you about moths and a few things you can do to prevent them from settling down in your rug. First of all let's look at the lifecycle of a moth to better understand how to spot them and why they are so important to deal with. When you discover moths it's most likely because they are flying around the room where you keep your rug, and if they are flying, then you probably have a bigger problem than you might think. Now if you see a lonesome moth flying around, it might simply mean that it came through an open window to pay you a visit, but if you see many of them you should most definitely check your rug because chances are you will find not only winged creatures but also eggs, larvaes, cocoons and their poop. The whole cycle begins with an adult female moth landing on your rug and squirting out some eggs, she will lay 40 to 50 eggs over 2 to 3 weeks and then die. These eggs then hatch within 4 to 10 days and the real enemy start their journey. Moths live as larvae for most of their life and remain in this stage for 2 to 30 months depending on environmental conditions. It is also during this stage that moths are eating natural fibers such as wool, fur, silk, feathers, felt and leather to get to the fibrous protein keratin they need to digest in order to survive. The larvae spin tunnels of silk and nearby materials which provide camouflage during the day and then come out at night to continue their feast. Once they are big and fat they start spinning a cocoon where they stay for 8 to 10 days during their metamorphosis into an adult winged moth and the cycle strats all over again. A thing to note about the adult moths is that while the males fly vigorously around in search for females to impregnate, the females are more covert and tend to hide in dark corners of the world. Now what can we do about all of this? Well we have one really powerful weapon and that is the sun! It doesn't matter which stage our moths are in, they all despise the sun, which is why they roam at night. They also seem to prefer stale air and wet conditions so the most important thing to do here is keep your rug well lit and well ventilated. Avoid keeping part of your rug under your sofa since this gives the moths a dark environment to play in all day long. Also do avoid keeping windows open during night, especially while keeping lights on in your house, since they are drawn to artificial light even though they hate the sun. Also make sure to keep your rug dry and flip it upside down once in a while just to make sure no moths are hiding under your rug where it's dark 24/7. Moths also hate strong smells so most essential oils will go a long way in keeping them away, just makes sure that the oil doesn't miscolor your rug, always spot-check before use. We don't recommend using industrial pesticides on your rug because not only do they smell terrible, they also wreak havoc on marine life even though they are well tolerated by most people. Again, if you find moths in your rug, just let a professional deal with it, you will be happier for it.
